5 Day Uganda Gorilla Trek

Overview

5-Day Rwanda Gorilla Trek Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Kigali – Gateway to the Land of a Thousand Hills

You’re met on arrival at Kigali International Airport by your private driver-guide. A seamless transfer takes you to your boutique hotel, perhaps The Retreat by Heaven or Kigali Serena Hotel. After a brief refresh, enjoy a private city tour: the moving Kigali Genocide Memorial, colorful craft markets, and a chef-led dinner featuring Rwanda’s farm-to-table cuisine.

Day 2: Journey to Volcanoes National Park

After a leisurely breakfast, travel north through Rwanda’s emerald hills, terraced slopes, misty valleys, and children waving along the roadside. Stop for a coffee tasting at a cooperative near Musanze, then check in to your lodge on the edge of Volcanoes National Park. Choices include Bisate Lodge (architectural wonder with sustainability at its heart) or Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge (classic, intimate, community-driven). As the sun dips, take in views of the Virunga volcano chain while your guide briefs you on the adventure ahead.

Day 3: Gorilla Trekking – A Once-in-a-Lifetime Encounter

Rise early for the highlight: gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park. After a private briefing, hike through dense rainforest, guided by expert rangers. The moment you lock eyes with a silverback, or watch juveniles tumble in the undergrowth, time bends. You’ll spend one awe-filled hour observing them in their natural habitat, an experience travelers often describe as life-changing. Return to your lodge for a hot lunch, then enjoy an optional visit to the Iby’iwacu Cultural Village, where former poachers share traditions through dance, drumming, and storytelling.

Day 4: Golden Monkeys and Lakeside Serenity

This morning, trek again, this time to see the playful, endangered golden monkeys, endemic to the Virunga Mountains. Later, descend to the tranquil shores of Lake Kivu. Spend the afternoon at leisure: a boat ride past fishing villages, or simply relaxing at your lakeside retreat. Sunset here feels like the exhale after the intensity of the gorilla trek.

Day 5: Return to Kigali and Departure

After breakfast overlooking the lake, drive back to Kigali. Depending on your flight schedule, stop for last-minute shopping at local galleries or enjoy a farewell lunch at Hotel des Mille Collines (made famous by Hotel Rwanda). Private transfer to the airport for your onward journey.
