Day 1 – Kigali Arrival & Volcanoes National Park
Arrive in Kigali, Rwanda’s capital, where your private driver-guide greets you at the airport. Before heading north, pause for a curated city experience: a guided visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial, or a stop at a contemporary coffee roastery for Rwanda’s famed single-origin beans.
By mid-afternoon, begin the scenic three-hour journey to Volcanoes National Park. The road winds through emerald hills and villages that gave Rwanda its name, “the Land of a Thousand Hills.” Arrive at your luxury lodge, where your villa faces the Virunga volcanoes. Enjoy a private dinner under starlight as anticipation builds for tomorrow’s trek.
Day 2 – Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park
Wake before dawn for a hearty breakfast, then transfer to the park headquarters in Kinigi. Here, expert rangers brief you on gorilla families, tracking methods, and forest etiquette.
Your trek begins through bamboo forests and Afro-alpine terrain alive with golden monkeys, orchids, and the calls of rare birds. After one to three hours, the moment arrives: a silverback gorilla emerges from the thicket. For the next precious hour, you stand meters away from a family of mountain gorillas, watching infants tumble in the undergrowth while mothers groom their young. It’s a primal, humbling encounter, one that rewires how you see the natural world.
Return to your lodge for a massage or soak, followed by a chef-curated dinner paired with Rwandan teas or South African wines.
Day 3 – Golden Monkeys & Return to Kigali
For those seeking a second wildlife experience, rise for a guided trek to see golden monkeys; playful, endangered primates found only in the Virungas. Their agile leaps through the bamboo canopy provide a lighter, joyful contrast to the gravity of the gorilla encounter.
Afterwards, drive back to Kigali, stopping en route at art cooperatives or markets for woven baskets and hand-carved sculptures. Enjoy a farewell lunch before your international departure.
